Learning Disability Week: Promoting Inclusion and Safeguarding for Children and Young People

This week marks Learning Disability Week 15-21st June, a national awareness campaign dedicated to ensuring that people with learning disabilities are seen, heard and valued. The NSPCC is using the opportunity to highlight important safeguarding resources for professionals working with children and young people who have additional needs.

Children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can face increased vulnerabilities and may be less able to communicate concerns when something is wrong. To help professionals better understand and respond to these challenges, the NSPCC has developed guidance on recognising additional needs and providing appropriate support to keep children safe.

Alongside safeguarding advice, the NSPCC is encouraging people to consider the impact of language. Through its Why Language Matters blog, the organisation explains the importance of using child-first language, such as “children who have disabilities” rather than “disabled children.” This approach helps ensure that children are recognised first and foremost as individuals, supporting inclusion, respect and empowerment.

Professionals and organisations are encouraged to explore the full range of NSPCC Learning resources to enhance their understanding and support children and young people with disabilities more effectively.
